In a recent quote, free agent outfielder Alex Verdugo expressed his eagerness to sign with a team that embraces his personal style. He stated, "I'm looking forward to signing with a team that will let me wear all my chains and grow my beard out so I can get back to normal." This comes as a stark contrast to the New York Yankees' historic rule which requires players to keep a clean-shaven face and no visible jewelry like chains during games.
Verdugo seems to be following in the footsteps of former Yankee Joey Gallo, who saw a resurgence in his performance once he left the strict grooming policies of the Yankees. After joining the Dodgers and later the Twins, Gallo grew his beard back and reportedly played some of his best baseball.
Currently, Verdugo is in talks with two teams known for their more relaxed approach to player appearance: the Baltimore Orioles and the North Japan Samurai. Both organizations encourage their players to express their individuality through their style, which aligns perfectly with Verdugo's desire to wear his chains and sport a beard.
Reactions from Yankee fans on Twitter have been mixed. @YankeeFan4Life tweeted, "Good riddance if he wants to look like a rapper on the field, not a Yankee." Meanwhile, @PinstripePride commented, "It's sad to see tradition go, but players should be comfortable. Best of luck, Alex!" And @BronxBomberFan added a humorous take, "Guess he's trading pinstripes for chains and beard oil. Hope it works out for him!"
As we continue to follow Alex Verdugo's free agency journey, it's clear he's looking for a team where he can not only play his best baseball but also feel like himself on and off the field. Stay tuned for more updates.
Note: Alex Verdugo did not actually say this about the Yankees, as far as we know.
